Search for a Kodiak lever action and three different rifles come up. Kodiak Defence, a Canadian company, makes the Luxari, a .357 Magnum carbine on the Marlin 1894 pattern. Chiappa, the Italian maker, uses Kodiak as a model name on two of its own: the 1886 Kodiak in .45-70 and the LA322 Kodiak Cub in .22 LR. We have all three in stock. Here is how they differ and which one fits the shooting you do.

Kodiak Defence Luxari: the .357 carbine
Kodiak Defence Luxari .357, $1,188.88
The newest of the three. It is a Marlin 1894-style lever gun, which means a flat-topped receiver that ejects to the side, with a 16 inch barrel and 8 rounds in the tube. Kodiak Defence fits it with a full-length Picatinny rail, a big loop lever and a checkered wood stock over silver metal, and it weighs about 6.3 lb. Full specs are on the Luxari .357 Magnum page.

It is a short, quick rifle for the truck or the cabin, for deer in thick bush where .357 is legal for big game, and for cheap, easy range days. It is the only Kodiak lever action with a rail, which takes a red dot or a small scope. Our Kodiak Luxari guide compares it with the Marlin 1894 Classic, the Levtac-92 and the S&W 1854.
Chiappa 1886 Kodiak: the .45-70
Chiappa 1886 Kodiak .45-70, $1,748.88
This is Chiappa’s copy of John Browning’s Winchester 1886, chambered in .45-70 Government. The Kodiak is the version built for bad weather: matte hard chrome on the metal and a soft-touch black rubber coating over the walnut stock and forend. It has an 18.5 inch barrel, holds 4 in the tube, weighs 7.8 lb and is 37 inches long, with a Skinner peep sight on the receiver, a fibre optic front and a big loop lever. See the Chiappa 1886 Kodiak listing for the rest.
đź›’ Buy the Chiappa 1886 Kodiak .45-70, $1,748.88
A .45-70 throws a heavy bullet with a lot of energy at modest range, which is why it is still the classic lever gun for moose, elk and black bear in thick country. Recoil is stout. If you want the same action in other dress, we also have the 1886 Ridge Runner 18.5 inch takedown at $1,848.88 and the 1886 Takedown with a 12 inch octagonal barrel at $1,739.99. Our moose rifle guide and bear defence guide cover where a .45-70 fits.
Chiappa LA322 Kodiak Cub: the .22
Chiappa LA322 Kodiak Cub, $698.88
The LA322 is Chiappa’s .22 LR lever gun, and the Kodiak Cub is the takedown version with a Cerakote receiver. The stock comes off the action, so it packs small for storage and travel. It has an 18.5 inch barrel, 15 rounds in the tube, a half-cock hammer, and a 3/8 inch dovetail on the receiver for a rimfire scope or red dot. It weighs about 5.5 lb. Here is the LA322 Kodiak Cub listing.

It makes a good first rifle, a grouse and rabbit gun, and the cheapest way to shoot a lever action all afternoon. The plain LA322 Takedown in black is $598.88 if you don’t need the Cerakote. For ammo, Aguila .22 LR standard velocity is $5.78 for 50. More rimfire picks are in our best .22 rifle guide and grouse gun guide.

Are Kodiak lever action rifles non-restricted?
Yes, all three. None of them is semi-automatic, so the 470 mm barrel rule doesn’t apply, and all three are well over the 660 mm minimum length. A regular PAL covers any Kodiak lever action rifle we sell, and we ship to your door once your licence is verified. Our guide to lever action rules in Canada covers storage, transport and hunting.
The design behind the Chiappa 1886 is covered on Wikipedia’s Winchester Model 1886 page.
Prices current as of October 2026. Check each product page for live stock. A non-restricted PAL is required.
