The UBS-12 shotgun from Akdas is a short 12 gauge pump built to mount under a rifle’s Picatinny rail, the same idea as the Masterkey and the US Army’s M26. With the stock it comes with, it also works as a shotgun on its own, and in Canada it is sold as non-restricted. CANFIREARM was the first to bring the Akdas UBS-12 into Canada, and we have carried it since January 2024. Here are the specs, how it mounts, what the law says, which shells to feed it and what it costs.

How the UBS-12 shotgun mounts under a rifle
The UBS-12 comes off its stock and goes onto a Picatinny rail at six o’clock under a rifle’s barrel. The Firearm Blog reported the swap takes a few minutes. Mounted, the unit is 409 mm long and adds 2.07 kg to the rifle before you load it. A 12 gauge puts real force through the mount, so use a rail that is fixed solidly to the rifle. The manual shows both setups:
On its own with the stock fitted, it handles like a very short pump gun.
Is an under-barrel shotgun legal in Canada?
The UBS-12 is classified non-restricted, so a standard PAL covers it, and you store and transport it like any other non-restricted shotgun. The numbers explain why. Under section 84 of the Criminal Code, a firearm that can be fired at under 660 mm (26 inch) by folding, telescoping or otherwise is restricted. The UBS-12 is 684 mm with its stock closed, so it stays over that line.
The same section makes a rifle or shotgun prohibited if it is cut down or altered to under 660 mm. Without its stock the unit is only 409 mm long, so keep the stock on whenever it isn’t mounted. If you want to put it under one of your rifles, call the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program at 1-800-731-4000 first and ask how that setup is classified.
UBS-12 shotgun ammo
The chamber is 70 mm, so use 2¾ inch 12 gauge shells only. Three inch magnums are too long for it. With an 8.7 inch barrel it is built for buckshot and slugs at close range, and low recoil slugs are easier on the shoulder. Shells we have in stock that fit:
- M90 00 buck, 2¾ inch, box of 25, $24.99. The same shells come in a 250-round box for $245.95.
- Challenger 00 buck, 2¾ inch, 25 rounds, $29.64.
- Challenger 1 oz low recoil slugs, 2¾ inch, 100 rounds, $127.88.
Our shotgun ammo section has the rest.
