Everyone should own a .22. It is the rifle you learn on, the one you shoot the most, and the cheapest day at the range there is: 250 rounds for under $30. Rimfire was never touched by the bans, so the choice is wide. Here is the best .22 rifle in Canada for each kind of shooter, all non-restricted, all in stock at CANFIREARM as of September 2026, from $206 to $895.
Two things to know first
Rimfire magazines are not capped. The 5 and 10 round limits apply to centrefire rifles and handguns. A 10, 15 or 25 round .22 magazine is legal, which is why the Henry AR-7 15-round magazine is the best selling item in the store.
Semi-auto or bolt. A semi-auto .22 is more fun and a better trainer for a centrefire semi-auto. A bolt .22 is more accurate, quieter to shoot, and better for squirrels and grouse. If you can only have one, most people end up with a semi-auto first.
Semi-autos
Derya TM22 Cadet, from $205.88
The cheapest real rifle we sell, and it is not a toy. Aluminum receiver, 4.85 lb, an adjustable stock with spacers so it fits a 10 year old or a grown adult, threaded barrel, blowback action. It is the right first rifle for a kid, and the right cheap rifle for anyone. 18 inch at $205.88, 16 inch at $214.99. The TM22 Feather at $378.99 and TM22 Pro at $488.99 are the grown-up versions. Our TM22 Feather review has more.

Ruger 10/22 Carbine, from $338.88
The most popular .22 ever made, for good reason. Cold hammer forged 18.5 inch barrel, the rotary magazine that never jams, and more aftermarket parts than any rifle on earth. Synthetic at $338.88, birch wood at $424.88. If you do not know what to buy, buy this.

Adler RF224 Tactical, from $439.88
An 11.7 inch barrel, 10+1, and a modern look. Short and light enough to be the rifle that lives in the truck. Legal at that barrel length because rimfire semi-autos are not subject to the 18.5 inch rule. Adler RF224 Tactical, and our RF224 review.

Henry AR-7 Survival Pack, $748.88

Bolt actions
CZ 457, from $698.57
The best rimfire action you can buy without spending Anschütz money. Adjustable trigger, cold hammer forged barrel, detachable mag, and CZ’s reputation for shooting tiny groups out of the box. Synthetic 16 inch at $698.57, Synthetic 20 inch at $746.88, or the American in walnut with a 24 inch threaded barrel at $888.88. The squirrel and grouse rifle.
Tikka T1x MTR, $895
Tikka’s rimfire uses the same footprint as the T3x, so it is the trainer for anyone who hunts with a Tikka. Cold hammer forged crossover barrel, 10-round mag, stainless bolt. The most accurate rifle on this page. Tikka T1x MTR.

Something different
The Rock Island TM22 Lever Action at $418.88 is a 7075 aluminum lever gun with a top rail that takes AR grips. The ISSC Scout SR at $588.88 is a straight-pull .22 with a survival kit in the stock. Neither is the sensible first choice; both are a lot of fun.
Ammo
For practice, Aguila 40gr high velocity, 250 pack, $28.58. For accuracy or a bolt gun, Sellier & Bellot Canadian Match standard velocity, $6.89 a box. Semi-autos want high velocity to cycle reliably; bolt guns do not care.
