Coyote season is the one hunt most Canadians can do all winter, close to home, with a small game licence. The best coyote rifle in Canada for you depends on how you hunt them: called in close and fast, or picked off across a field. These are the six we would point you at, all non-restricted, all in stock as of September 2026, with what each one is good at.
What a coyote rifle needs
- A fast, flat cartridge. .223, .22-250 and .243 cover 95 percent of coyote hunting. They shoot flat to 250 yards and do not wreck pelts the way a .308 does.
- Quick follow-ups. Coyotes come in pairs and leave at 30 miles an hour. A semi-auto gets you the second dog; a bolt gun usually does not.
- Optics that work at dawn. A low-power variable or a 3-9x with a big objective. Most of your shots come in the first and last half hour of light.
- Light enough to carry. Calling means walking. Seven pounds with a scope is nice; ten is not.
1. Akdas Alcor .223 semi-auto, $1,399.99
The best semi-auto coyote rifle you can buy in Canada right now for the money. Gas-operated, 18.5 inch nitrided barrel, iron sights plus a Picatinny rail, AR magazines, 7 pounds. When two come to the call, the second shot is already there. The 1:7 twist handles 50 grain varmint bullets through to 77 grain loads, so you can tune it to whatever your rifle likes.
It is sold in synthetic for $1,399.99 and wood for $1,499.99, and right now both come bundled with 200 rounds at the same price. Take the synthetic for coyotes. It does not care about snow.
2. Adler AD500A .223 semi-auto, $1,077.99
The budget semi-auto. Also .223, also AR magazines, with a telescoping stock and an M-LOK handguard, so a light or bipod goes on without adapters. It is new to Canada this year, so there is less owner history than the Alcor has, but at $322 less it is the one to look at if the budget is tight. Adler AD500A .223.
3. Howa M1500 .22-250, $698.99
The classic prairie coyote rifle. The .22-250 pushes a 55 grain bullet at 3,600 fps, which means less holdover and less wind drift than a .223 at 300 yards. Howa’s bolt action is smooth, the trigger is good out of the box, and the price is hard to argue with. Pelts suffer a bit more at close range. Howa M1500 .22-250.
4. CZ 600 Alpha .223, $1,268.88
A serious bolt gun at a fair price: cold hammer forged 24 inch barrel, threaded muzzle, adjustable trigger, detachable magazine. Heavier and longer than the Alcor, so this is the rifle for sitting on a fenceline or a field edge, not for running and gunning. Accuracy is a level above any semi-auto on this page. CZ 600 Alpha .223.
5. Ruger American .243, $793.84
If the same rifle has to hunt deer, buy a .243. It is legal for big game in every province, including Quebec and Nova Scotia where the .223 is not, and a 58 to 75 grain varmint load makes it a fine coyote rifle. The Ruger American is light, accurate and cheap. Ruger American .243.
6. Tikka T3x Varmint .223, $1,650
For the hunter who shoots a lot from one spot and wants the tightest groups on the list. Heavy stainless 23.7 inch barrel that stays cool through a long stand, Tikka’s excellent trigger, and a 1:8 twist. It is not a walking rifle. Tikka T3x Varmint .223.
Ammo
Practice with FMJ, hunt with a varmint bullet. 50 to 55 grain V-MAX, Varmageddon or Ballistic Tip loads expand fast and usually stay inside the animal, which is what you want for pelts. Full metal jacket wounds and does not drop coyotes reliably. Our .223 section has the cheap practice ammo in stock year-round; hunting loads come and go, so grab a couple of boxes when you see them.
Optics
Coyotes are shot in poor light at 40 to 250 yards. A 1-8x LPVO like the Riton X3 Tactix 1-8×24 ($558) covers all of it on a semi-auto. On a bolt gun, a 3-9×40 or 4-12×40 with a big objective does better at last light. The Bushnell Engage 3-9×40 is $255.98 and plenty. Full list in the optics category.
The rules, briefly
Coyotes are classed as furbearers or small game in most provinces, so a small game licence usually covers them. Seasons are long, and on private land in the prairie provinces they often run year-round. Two things trip people up: night hunting with lights is illegal in most provinces including Ontario, and in Ontario you cannot carry a centre-fire rifle for small game during an open deer season unless you are hunting coyote or wolf, which you are. Some Ontario WMUs also require a coyote tag. Check your provincial summary before you go out.
