Akdas Alcor Magazines, Optics and Upgrades: What Fits and What to Buy

Magpul PMAG 5.56 magazine in black with cartridges visible at the top

The rifle comes with one short 5-round magazine, a soft case and a sling. That is enough to get to the range once. This is the rest: which Akdas Alcor magazines actually work, why some hold the bolt open and some do not, and what optics, mounts and stock parts fit the rifle.

Akdas Alcor magazines: what fits

The Alcor uses standard STANAG (AR-15) magazines. Anything that fits an AR fits the Alcor, as long as it is pinned to 5 rounds, which is the legal limit for a semi-auto centrefire rifle in Canada.

What owners report after a year and a half of the rifle being in Canada:

  • Magpul PMAG Gen M2 and Gen M3 are the safe choice. They seat with the bolt closed without slapping, they drop free, and they feed. A full-length 5/30 body gives you something to grip; a short 5-round body sits flush and snags less in the bush.
  • Bolt hold-open is the picky part. Some rifles lock back on Gen 2 PMAGs but not Gen 3, and some the other way around. It comes down to the follower shape and how much the mag rocks in the well. It does not affect feeding; you just may not get last-round lock-back with every mag.
  • Cross Industries mags work once you stop them rocking. Owners have done it with a strip of electrical tape on the mag body.
  • Steel and aluminum GI mags get mixed reports. One retailer’s listing said the Alcor did not like metal mags; several owners run them without trouble. If you have them, try them before you buy more. Do not force one that will not seat.
  • LAR-15 and MFT mags have both been run through Alcors without issues.

Buy two or three PMAGs and you are done. We stock the Gen M2 window PMAG pinned to 5 at $34.99, and the Gen M3 pinned version when it is in.

Ammunition

The Alcor is chambered in .223 Remington, not 5.56 NATO. Shoot .223. The 1:7 twist barrel will stabilize anything from 55 to 77 grains, so heavier match and hunting loads are fine.

Cheap practice: PMC Bronze 55gr battle pack of 200 at $158.88, which is what comes in the Alcor 200-round bundle. Owners have also run Winchester white box, Federal American Eagle, Hornady Superformance and Nosler Varmageddon through it without a hiccup. For coyotes or deer, use an expanding bullet, not FMJ. Our .223 section has what is in stock.

Optics and mounts

The Alcor has integral iron sights and a Picatinny rail on top of the receiver, so it shoots fine with nothing added. When you do add glass, anything with a standard Picatinny mount goes straight on. No adapter rails, no drilling.

What suits the rifle:

  • Red dot for range days, coyotes at first light and anything inside 150 yards. The Bushnell AR Optics First Strike 2.0 at $248.88 or the Riton X1 Tactix 2 MOA at $259.99 both come with a mount. Mount it high enough that the dot sits above the iron sights rather than in line with them.
  • 1-8x LPVO if you want one optic for everything. The Riton X3 Tactix 1-8×24 is $558. You will need a 30 mm cantilever mount for the eye relief to work with the fixed stock.
  • 3-9×40 if the rifle is mainly for hunting. The Bushnell Engage 3-9×40 at $255.98 in a set of medium 1-inch rings is plenty for a .223 out to 300 yards.

One owner runs a Holosun 510C on his and reports decent groups. Height matters more than brand. The rear sight sits on the barrel just ahead of the receiver, so a scope with a 40 mm objective needs medium rings to clear it, and a red dot on a low mount will have the rear sight in the bottom of the window. Browse everything in the optics category.

Lights and the handguard problem

This is the Alcor’s one real gap. The factory handguard has no M-LOK or accessory slots, so there is nowhere to hang a light or bipod without changing parts. Owners get around it with an offset mount on the receiver rail, which puts the light beside the optic. It looks odd but it works.

Aftermarket aluminum handguards with M-LOK exist. Crusader Arms makes one, and there are 3D printed kits from small Canadian shops. We do not stock them yet. If you need M-LOK from the factory and do not want to swap parts, look at the Adler AD500A instead.

Stocks and the Sport conversion kit

Akdas makes an Alcor Sport conversion kit that replaces the fixed stock with an AR-style stock interface, so you can run stocks like the Magpul CTR. We sell it as a kit with the CTR stock included when we can get them. It sells out fast, so check the listing.

The Magpul CTR stock on its own is $89.99 if you already have the kit.

Slings, cases, cleaning

The rifle ships with a padded soft case and a basic sling, and the stock has sling studs. Any two-point sling works. Clean it like any gas gun: bore from the chamber end, wipe down the bolt and gas system every few hundred rounds, light oil, done. The Melonite barrel does not need babying. For long storage see our guide on keeping guns from rusting in a safe.
