Kel-Tec KS7 and KSG in Canada: Bullpup Pump Shotguns Compared

Kel-Tec KS7 12 gauge bullpup pump shotgun in black with integral carry handle

The Kel-Tec KS7 and the KSG are the two bullpup pump shotguns most Canadians ask about. Both are non-restricted, both put an 18.5 inch barrel in a gun about 26 inches long, and both eject down, so they work for left-handed shooters too. The difference is the magazine: one tube on the KS7, two on the KSG. The KS7 starts at $799.88 and the KSG at $719.88 in .410. Here is how to choose.

Kel-Tec KS7: one tube, slimmer and simpler

One magazine tube keeps the KS7 narrower and simpler to load, and it still holds seven. It is the easier of the two to carry and to learn. The KS7 in black is $799.88. The updated Gen2 is $888.88 in tan and $944.88 in OD green.

Kel-Tec KSG: twin tubes, twice the shells

Two tubes under the barrel and a selector switch, so you can load one tube with birdshot and the other with slugs and choose between them. That is a lot of shells for a gun this size. The KSG Compact is $1,188.88, the KSG in tan is $1,199.88, the full-size KSG 12 gauge is the original, and the KSG Defender is $1,554.88.

KSG25 and KSG .410

The KSG25 ($1,564.99) stretches the barrel to 30.5 inches and lengthens the tubes, which makes it a range gun with a lot of capacity. The KSG in .410 ($719.88) is the cheapest way into the design and easy on the shoulder.

Are the Kel-Tec KS7 and KSG legal in Canada?

Yes. The KSG and KS7 are pump actions, so the 470 mm barrel rule for semi-autos does not apply, and they are sold as non-restricted. Canada’s five-shell limit applies to semi-auto centrefire long guns, not pumps, so the full tubes are legal. A regular PAL covers them.

KS7 and KSG vs the Hatsan BullTac

The Hatsan Escort BullTac is a Turkish bullpup pump at $368.88, less than half the price of a KS7, with 5+1 capacity and a carry handle rail. It also comes as a semi-auto. The Kel-Tecs hold more and have a longer track record. Our Hatsan BullTac guide covers it.
